Strategies for low income families

With gas prices and the cost of food going up we need to look at all options. As prices continue to rise it becomes clear that families with low income need to learn how to use money in a proper way. How do low income families survive during these times?

So many things have happened with our economy and many families have been hit hard because of it. Many people have lost their jobs due to downsizing, as well as some businesses that have closed their doors. Going from a good paying job to one that pays you much less is one factor that has led to a big loss of income in our country. There is no need to sit back and take it. If you are in this situation you need to fight back! Get motivated! Some of these strategies may seem like they may be hard to achieve, but In time you'll see that there are solutions and things that can work.

Let's take a look at some of the strategies on how you can save money when you don't have a lot to work with.

Creating a budget. What is your current financial situation and which direction must you go in to help you in the future? If you are one of many that are currently in the low income bracket, then this is extremely important to know, in order to figure out how short you will be on any current bills. From this point you will look at all options and find ways to cut costs where and when necessary.

Communicate with utility companies. Most companies will work with you, so don't be afraid to talk to them. There are many companies that offer programs that will allow you to pay the same amount on a monthly basis based on your average monthly usage. This is a huge help to you when it comes to creating and working with a budget. You know what is due and the exact amount that needs to be paid. You will not get any surprises.

How can you lower your energy costs? There are many things that can be done to help with saving energy as well as saving money. Setting your thermostat to a lower temperature will help cut the costs of heating. Remember you can always put on a sweater or even use blankets. During the summer, it's good to use ceiling fans to keep the air circulating and in the evening open your windows and let that all natural breeze in. Don't forget to switch to the CFL light bulbs. This will save you money on your electricity. By looking into ways to cut your energy costs, you will notice a huge savings over a year's time.

Grocery Shopping. We all love doing this don't we? I didn't think so. Grocery shopping and the use of coupons can save you a ton of money. There are many stores out there that will double your coupon values, so perhaps check around and see what stores near you might participate in this option. Preparing your meals at home will end up costing you much less than if you went out to eat. The cost for a family to eat out can be outrageous these days! You may also want to consider finding a butcher shop to get better prices on your meats as well.

Pack your lunch. It pays to take your lunch to work and school rather than eating out. By doing this, you are looking at saving approximately $20 or more per week per person. You may also want to consider reusable lunch bags and water bottles to save yourself from having to purchase bags and drinks.

Yard Sales. Let's face it. We all have items that are laying around our homes that we don't use, and we don't need. Holding a yard sale not only can put money in your pocket but it helps clean out the clutter in your home.

Rethink entertainment. How much do you spend on entertainment? Were you aware that you can actually check out movies and CD's from your local library? Perhaps instead of going out to the movies you can buy a movie from your local Wal-Mart when they are on sale and have a family movie night at home. That right there is a huge savings! If you have memberships like book clubs, movie clubs, or even a gym membership, you may want to consider cancelling them until finances are better.

The bottom line is, when you put new strategies into place when money is tight, you can actually continue to have fun. Get motivated, make adjustments, put your plan into action, and watch the results unfold!
