Coping with Job Loss

Woman coping with job loss

With today's economy, there are so many uncertainties that lay ahead. You find that people are being laid off, companies are downsizing to prevent from closing their businesses altogether, and unfortunately jobs are scarce. We want to share with you some ways that we have found just might help you to cope with a job loss.

Many mixed emotions can be running through your mind when losing a job. Stages of denial and anger may come into play. Job loss is just that; A loss. Give yourself some time to grieve and come to terms with acceptance. As hard as it may seem, you need to stand up, dust off, and move forward. Especially if you happen to be the main means of financial support in your home. This can put a huge weight on your shoulders. It is now time to move forward, and set a new plan into motion.

Do you qualify for unemployment? Chances are that if your company downsized, you will qualify for unemployment, which will definitely help you while you look for new work. Go to your local unemployment office and find out more details.

Review your financial situation – Nowadays it takes two household incomes to survive. It's now time to look at your finances and perhaps change your budget while you are going through the process of looking for a new job. Make adjustments where you can. Does this mean you stay home instead of going to the movies for a month? Perhaps eating at home instead of eating out? That new tool you have been wanting? Putting a hold on this doesn't mean you won't get it. It's just a temporary readjustment. After you get your new job and get a new budget on track, think about rewarding yourself. You did it!

Health insurance – The Company you were working for may participate in COBRA which gives workers who have lost their jobs, the option to continue to pay for their health care benefits. Generally this can be expensive. Another option would be to see if your spouse has health insurance that you can be added to, to prevent you from losing coverage all together.

Assessing the situation – Are there any jobs in your current line of work in your area? Getting on the internet and doing some searching will help you locate these job possibilities. Most areas have a Career Center or something similar to Job Development. These places will also help you to create a resume if needed and help you to locate any local job that might be right for you.

Did you want to remain in the area? Were you interested in returning to school? These are just a couple of questions you may want to be asking yourself so that you can get a better idea of what direction to take.

For the all new full time moms that no longer work outside of the home, you may want to give our WAHM Directory a peek. Here you will find a list of different companies that are looking for moms who want to work from home. http://www.thewahmconnection.com/Business/directsales.html

Remember to keep your chin up. This is just a temporary setback, and be sure to keep a positive attitude!
