Why You Need a Business Plan for Your Home Business
TheWahmConnection.com© All Rights Reserved. You've come up with a great idea for your home business. Now all that's left for you to do is get started! OK, so you haven't quite worked out every little detail, but you can figure those out along the way, can't you? You're eager to get started making money. Or maybe you've been running a home business for a while now but you still feel like there are some pieces missing. When people ask you what your business does… exactly… you have a hard time answering the question. When you write an ad for your business, you're not quite sure what it should say. Or even where would be the best place to print the ad. If you're a home business owner in either of those situations, you need a business plan. Home business owners often think they don't need to write down a plan because their business is just them working from a home office. They have no overhead, no employees, no financing to worry about. But a business plan is much more than that. Starting any business without a business plan is a lot like getting into your car and going for a drive without a map or destination in mind. Sure, it might be fun to see new things and you'll enjoy the freedom, but sooner or later you're going to want to end up somewhere. You need a business plan to tell you exactly where you want to go and how you're going to get there. A lot of home business owners think they can keep their business plan in their heads. That's a start, but if that's where yours is right now, you need to write it down. If you keep it in your head, it's easy to brush over important details that need to be worked out. Another reason to write it down is, as your business develops, you're going to be faced with a lot of distractions. If your plan is written down somewhere you can refer to it regularly and be reminded of what you need to focus on to meet your goals. Formal business plans can run from 25 to 100 words, but just one page is enough to get you started. If you're not seeking financing, and you're running the business on your own from home, you don't need a formal document. Here are some of the things it should include: What your business does Once you've written your business plan, don't just file it away. Refer to it regularly and make sure you're on the right track. You may even need to make some changes to your plan as your business develops. As your business changes, your business plan should be updated to reflect those changes. <<< Back to Business Resources
