Naming Your WAHM Company

WAHM thinking of a business name for her company

Naming your work at home company is one of the key components to starting off a new company. The company name can be mildly responsible for the success or failure, at to what extent, of the company. Those who are self-employed or are mothers who work from the comfort of their homes understand that a simple name for your new business can have insurmountable effects. When it comes to business, a name means a lot, dictating what the customers should expect from you and your company. If you are starting a new work at home business, the last thing you want is for the name to be a dud, starting your business off on the wrong foot.

Before determining the success of the name for your future business, brainstorm a list of things you want integrated into the name. Some work at home businesses integrate keywords such as “at home” or “working mother” or the names of their family pet, whereas others will incorporate things such as what they do, for instance, “home writing mom”. The business name can be a mixture of any noun or verb which is meaningful, a play on words, even a reference to a book, movie, or favorite quote.

Once you have a brainstormed list of ideas which could possibly be molded together to form the work at home name, there are three key components to finding a good name for a new work at home business. The first step is checking public records for the originality of the name you want. Before you can have a legitimate business with a legitimate business name you need to register to fictitious business name. You might be the only person behind the work at home company, but the name will always be referred to as fictitious because the name of the company is the substitute for the person whose identity is behind the company. A truly fictitious name does not need your name or any personal information in it.

There are state agencies which will allow you to check the proposed business names which you have against a database of all the other existing businesses so that you can ensure that your fictitious name is unique and unused in that turn of phrase and or spelling, word placement, spacing, capitalization, etc... If you do not register the name of your work at home company then you run the risk of facing many legal issues later on with a battle for trademarked materials, especially if you are a writer. Doing the research for public records is well worth the time and effort.

The second key to naming your work at home company is avoiding foreign language spelling problems. If you are looking to integrate a foreign language into your work at home company name then you should research the proper translation and make sure that you have verified the possible exposure to foreign markets and how your work at home company name might come off to other countries. You want to avoid any negative connotations found in names whose meanings are lost in translation. Critically examine any acronyms you might be using and avoid pronunciation challenges or spelling challenges for the sake of your potential clients. Lastly, make it memorable and relevant to the work or services you are supplying.
